Harris' Double-Double Paces 'Bama State Past MVSU, 57-54

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Cordasia Harris posted her second double-double of the season to lead Alabama State University to a 57-54 win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
 
Harris finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds, one short of tying her career-high, to lead three Lady Hornets in double figures. Ashley Gray had a career-high 11 points followed by Whitney Dunn with 10 points.

Alabama State pulled down 43 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Mississippi Valley State's 37, led by Harris' 13 boards. The Hornets also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 13 second-chance points.

Alabama State's defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 6.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 30.4 percent from the field. The Hornets also limited Jaylia Reed to 1-of-7 shooting from downtown and seven points in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alabama State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Alabama State then cut the Delta Devils lead to 24-22 before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Harris, to take a 28-24 lead. The Delta Devils cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 31-28 advantage heading into halftime. Alabama State dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 18 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Alabama State added to its advantage and owned a 48-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Alabama State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 11 of the team's 17 third-quarter points.

The Hornets then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its nine points in the paint.
