Hornets rally from 14-point deficit to defeat Mississippi Valley State 54-17

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  | Alabama State powered back from down 14 points to secure a 54-17 comeback victory against Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon at ASU Stadium.

The Hornets improved to 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Delta Devils fell to 0-6 and 0-2.

Kareem Keye led Alabama State's passing attack with 326 yards through the air, tossing four touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Jamarie Hostzclaw led all Hornets rushers with 54 yards and one touchdown in the contest, picking up 6.8 yards per carry. Hostzclaw also added 44 receiving yards. Tacaris Bozeman also added 35 yards on the ground, averaging 8.8 yards per carry.

Robert McMinn reeled in two catches for 122 yards and two scores.

Treqwan Thomas showed out for the Alabama State defense, collecting 11 tackles, 3.5 TFL, and two sacks. James Burgess added five tackles, 0.5 TFL, and one interception.

Both Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State forced one turnover in Saturday's contest, with Alabama State turning that takeaway into three points. The Alabama State offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 50 percent of third-down attempts.

Defensively, Alabama State did an impressive job neutralizing the Mississippi Valley State offensive attack, holding the Delta Devils to 158 total yards. The Hornets kept Mississippi Valley State under 150 yards on both the ground and through the air, allowing 108 passing and 50 rushing yards. The Hornets defense took up residence in Mississippi Valley State's backfield all game, racking up four sacks and 12 total tackles for loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alabama State put up 54 points on eight different scoring plays. The Hornets took the lead for good with 6:05 left in the second quarter, opening up a 20-17 advantage on the Delta Devils. hit McMinn on an 84-yard touchdown catch to close a three-play, 86-yard drive. The Hornets then rode that lead to victory, increasing their advantage by 34 points along the way.
