Lady Hornets drop 3-2 match to Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas --The Alabama State volleyball team fell to the Texas Southern Lady Tigers in five sets (19-25, 25-17, 14-25, 25-19, 11-15) Sunday on the road at Health & Physical Education Arena.

Jyriah Morgan finished with 18 kills on the day to lead the Lady Hornets attack. ASU received 14 digs from Breanna Swanson and eight blocks from Zanobia Willis to lead them defensively.

» Bailee Payne had a match-high three aces in the loss.
» Morgan had a match-high 18 kills for Alabama State.
» The Lady Hornet attackers were helped by a match-high 22 assists from Kamrynn Clay.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Hornets were in an early deficit, dropping a tough first set 25-19. ASU trailed by as many as seven points as Texas Southern grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set tied up four times before the Lady Tigers took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | ASU responded to pick up a 25-17 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Lady Hornets grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that showcased three lead changes before Alabama State took over in the second half of the stanza. Alabama State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking six Texas Southern attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 Texas Southern attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 3 | ASU fell in set three, putting the Lady Hornets in a 2-1 deficit. The Lady Hornets lost the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before losing the set 25-14.

SET 4 | The Lady Hornets then responded to secure the fourth set 25-19 to force a fifth set. ASU took control of the set at 2-1 and never looked back. The Lady Hornets led by as many as eight points at 19-11 before closing out the stanza.

SET 5 | ASU came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but dropping the first, third, and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-11, to fall in the match. The Lady Hornets had a lead early in the set at 2-2 before Texas Southern took over.
