CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. |Solangelei Akridge, Alanah Pooler and Cordasia Harris combined to score 38 of Alabama State's 50 total points, but the Hornets fell to the Virginia Cavaliers 85-50 on the road Wednesday.
The Hornets (2-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Akridge, who had 15 points. Pooler tacked on 13 points and Harris chipped in as well with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Harris pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Alabama State, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 16 second chance points.
Alabama State forced 20 Virginia turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Taylor Smith led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
Alabama State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 25-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 49-19 halftime deficit.
Virginia continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 50-19 advantage before Alabama State went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Akridge, to trim its deficit to 50-26 with 8:06 to go in the third. Virginia countered and stretched its lead to 66-38 heading into the fourth. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
Alabama State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 85-50. Alabama State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
