Alabama State Rolls Past Omaha to Open Akron Basketball Classic

AKRON, Ohio -- Five Hornets put up double-digit points, and Alabama State beat the Omaha Mavericks 85-67 at James A. Rhodes Arena Friday.

The Hornets (2-2) had five players score in double figures, led by Amarr Knox, who had 19 points and two steals.

Micah Simpson tacked on 17 points, six rebounds, and two steals from the bench. TJ Madlock helped out with 15 points and seven assists.

ASU out-rebounded Omaha 42-41 in Friday's game, paced by eight boards from D'Ante Bass.

The ASU defense held Omaha shooters to only 34.9 percent from the field, including 22.2 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 21-19 advantage, ASU went on a 7-0 run with 10:08 left in the first half to increase its lead to 28-19 and went into halftime with a 40-36 advantage. The Hornets relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 40 points.

Following intermission, ASU kept widening that lead, expanding it to 68-60 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Knox's three, to grow the lead to 76-60 with 4:19 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 85-67 win.
