Alabama State Uses Strong 2nd Half to Closeout Lamar

AKRON, Ohio --The Alabama State men's basketball team got a 25-point performance from the bench on the way to a 77-75 win over the Lamar Cardinals at James A. Rhodes Arena Saturday.

The Hornets (3-2) had four players score in double figures, led by CJ Hines, who had 24 points. TJ Madlock added 11 points and nine rebounds and Micah Simpson helped out with 11 points off the bench.

Hines hit three 3-pointers for the Hornets in the contest.

The ASU defense effectively took away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 13 Cardinal turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor.

How It Happened

After falling behind 16-4, ASU went on a 6-0 run with 13:59 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Simpson, to narrow its deficit to 16-10. The Hornets continued to close the gap, cutting the Lamar lead to 34-29 by the end of the first half.

After intermission, ASU kept the Cardinals from increasing their lead before going on a 10-0 run to seize a 63-58 lead with 6:17 to go in the contest. The Cardinals narrowed the margin, but the Hornets still held on for the 77-75 win. ASU took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 48 points in the lane.
