Harris' Double-Double Leads Alabama State Past Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. |  Cordasia Harris notched a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to help the Alabama State University women's basketball team to a season-opening win over Faulkner Universtiy, 70-58, a the Dunn-Oliver Acaddome on Monday.

The Hornets (1-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Harris, who secured a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Justina Graham added 10 points and two steals and Amari Franklin added seven points and five assists.

Harris pulled down six offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Alabama State, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 18 second chance points.

Alabama State's defense held Faulkner to only 34.7 percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 3-2, Alabama State went on a 7-0 run with 7:31 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Harris, to take a 9-3 lead. The Hornets then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with an 18-12 advantage. Alabama State capitalized on 10 Faulkner turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.

The Hornets used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 38-25 edge. Alabama State forced seven Faulkner turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.

Alabama State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 50-32 with 5:33 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hornets still entered the fourth quarter with a 58-42 edge. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.

The Hornets then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
