Harris has double-double in Alabama State's 55-50 victory against Stillman

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Cordasia Harris secured her second straight double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds to help the Alabama State University women's basketball team take do Stillman College 55-50 at the Dunn Oliver Acadcome on Wednesday.

The Hornets (2-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Harris, who notched a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Solangelei Akridge tacked on 10 points and two steals and Alanah Pooler added four points.

Harris pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Alabama State, grabbing 18 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

Alabama State's defense held Stillman to only 36.4 percent shooting from the field, including 26.9 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After falling behind 3-1, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run with 8:03 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Harris, to take a 7-3 lead. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-12 advantage. Alabama State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 15 points close to the basket.

Alabama State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:23 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Harris, to increase its lead to 23-16. The Tigers cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 27-24 advantage heading into halftime. Alabama State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 12 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Alabama State held on to its advantage and owned a 39-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.

Stillman proceeded to take a 49-44 lead before Alabama State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Harris' layup, to seize a 52-49 lead with 1:37 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 55-50 win. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
