MOBILE, AL -- Alabama State University put together a furious comeback, scoring three runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short in a 10-9 to the University of South Alabama on Monday at Stanky Field.
Junior Jose Almazan (2-3) came out of the bullpen for Alabama State (10-12) and took the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Senior Jack Hay put Alabama State on the board with a one-out solo home run off senior Cade Carlson.
The Jaguars failed to push any runs across before the Hornets offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Alabama State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Ali LaPread, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Hornets.
Alabama State's lead had disappeared by the time the sixth inning came around and turned into a 6-2 South Alabama advantage, when the Hornets cut that deficit to 6-4.
Alabama State kept the Jaguars off the board before tying it up in the seventh. Sophomore Jamal George and senior Randy Flores came in to score the two Hornets runs in the frame, tying the score at 6-6.
South Alabama then broke up that tie and grabbed a 7-6 lead moving into the ninth, when the Hornets jumped ahead to take a 9-7 lead. The Hornets were unable to hold the lead, as South Alabama scored three times in the bottom half of the ninth to grab the 10-9 win.
