MONTGOMERY, Ala. The Alabama State women's basketball dropped a hard fought 52-47 decision to Grambling State University on Senior Day inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Saturday.
Saturday's game was senior day as the Lady Hornets honored senior DaKiyah during post game festivities.
The Hornets (3-26, 3-15) had two players score in double figures, led by Cordasia Harris, who put together a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Justina Graham added 10 points and eight rebounds off of the bench and DaKiyah Sanders added five points and three steals.
Led by Harris' three offensive rebounds, Alabama State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.
Alabama State's defense held Grambling to only 32.8 percent shooting from the field, including 15.4 percent from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 10-6, Alabama State went on a 14-0 run with 4:44 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Graham, to take a 20-10 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Alabama State capitalized on seven Grambling turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.
The Hornets maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 27-21 edge. Alabama State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down one three-point shot to account for three of its seven points.
Alabama State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Tigers 43-33 entering the fourth. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring six of its six points in the paint.
Alabama State kept the Tigers from increasing their lead before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Harris' layup, to shrink the deficit to 49-47 with 45 seconds to go in the contest. Grambling responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 52-47. Alabama State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 14 points.
