JACKSON, Miss. | Freshman Isaiah Landry collected four hits to help lead the Alabama State baseball over the Jackson State Tigers 9-3 in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday.
Sophomore Alex Burden (2-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Alabama State (18-19, 9-8). The southpaw went eight innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits, allowing five walks and striking out four. Junior Caio Araujo also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
In addition to his four hits, Landry had a triple and two RBI to lead the Hornets. Senior Randy Flores put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Freshman Juan Cruz also chipped in for Alabama State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Flores came across to score the lone run of the inning for Alabama State and get them on the board.
The Tigers then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Hornets got back on the board in the fourth. which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Hornets.
Alabama State held Jackson State without a run before building their lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning. The Hornets picked up a run on Flores' one-out solo home run off junior Isaiah Williams.
Alabama State held the Tigers scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. bringing the score to 8-3 in favor of Alabama State.
The Hornets held Jackson State off the scoreboard before expanding their lead to 9-3 in the ninth inning. Alabama State scored a run on an RBI triple off the bat of Landry, scoring freshman Yeriel Pastrana. The score remained 9-3 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win.
