MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Hornets put 16 runs on the board and knock off the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 16-2 Friday.
Sophomore Jorhan Laboy (6-3) got the win for Alabama State (20-20, ). The southpaw went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out seven. Freshman Jafet Martinez also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two.
Offensively, the Hornets were paced by senior Randy Flores, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Junior Kyler McIntosh furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Freshman Quentin Jenkins also contributed for Alabama State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Alabama State's offense started clicking and put up eight runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Flores.
The Hornets then held the Delta Devils scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. which brought the Hornets lead to 11-0.
Alabama State held Mississippi Valley State without a run before building their lead to 14-0 the following inning.
The Delta Devils gained ground, closing the gap to 14-2 until Alabama State added some insurance in the sixth. Freshman Juan Cruz's run-scoring single brought home one run in a two-run output for the Hornets, bringing the score to 16-2 in favor of Alabama State. The score remained 16-2 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win.
