HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Yeriel Pastrana, Ali LaPread and Juan Cruz combined for 13 RBIs to lead the Alabama State Hornets past the Alabama A&M 20-9 on Monday.
Junior Will Smith (1-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Alabama State (24-22, 15-9). The right-hander went 3.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.
In addition to his four hits, Pastrana had a double, a grand slam and six RBI to lead the Hornets. Junior K. McIntosh compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. LaPread also contributed for Alabama State, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets scored in six different innings on the way to the win. After holding the lead two different times earlier in the ballgame, Alabama State broke an 8-8 tie and took the lead for good at 9-8 in the sixth inning The big hits for the Hornets in the inning were a grand slam off the bat of Pastrana and a two-run single from freshman Cruz.
