Alabama State Volleyball Dominates on Day 1 of ASU Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State opened the Alabama State Invitational with two convincing wins over Louisiana–Monroe (3-1) and South Carolina State (3-0).

ASU vs. ULM
ASU needed only four sets (25-20, 18-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-23) to take down the ULM Warhawks Friday at home at the Acadome.

Kaylen Hines finished with 11 kills on the day to lead the Lady Hornets attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .435. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Temperance Chatman had 19 and A'Nylah Cobb had 12. From the front row, Zanobia Willis contributed nine blocks and Christyn Ashby added five rejections.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Lady Hornets took set one 25-20 thanks to a solid performance on the attacking side. ASU registered a .310 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set victory. Alabama State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | ASU dropped the second set 25-18, evening the match at a set apiece. ASU trailed by as many as seven points as ULM grabbed the advantage for good at 6-5.

SET 3 | ASU then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking two sets to one lead in the match. An overpowering defensive display from the front row helped the Lady Hornets to a 28-26 victory. Alabama State notched eight blocks in the set win. The Lady Hornets rallied from down six at 13-7 to grab the win.

SET 4 | ASU kept the momentum and earned the match win with a 25-23 fourth-set victory. The Lady Hornets seized the set win despite trailing by nine points at 21-12 before fighting back to claim victory. ASU jumped in front at 24-23 and hung on the rest of the way.

ASU vs. SCSU
ASU needed only three sets (25-12, 25-19, 25-20) to defeat the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Hornets offense was paced by Willis, who finished with 12 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .391. Hines added 11 and Cobb chipped in with 11 as part of a balanced Alabama State attack.

SET 2 | ASU took set two 25-19 to quickly jump to a 2-0 lead. The Lady Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory.

SET 3 | The Lady Hornets closed the match in a 3-0 sweep after winning the third set. ASU took control of the set early when the score was 4-3 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-20. ASU ended on a strong note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, five points, to finish off the set, totaling 19 kills in the set.
