MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Cordasia Harris recorded her third double-double of the season to lead Alabama State women's basketball to a 58-46 victory against the Universtiy of Arkanas-Pine Bluff at the Dunn-Oliver Acadeom on Thursday.
Harris notched a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Hornets (3-10, 1-0). Smith added 18 points and Amari Franklin helped out with eight points and three steals.
Led by Harris' five offensive rebounds, Alabama State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in nine second chance points.
The Alabama State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 22 UAPB turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Franklin's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 8-6 advantage, Alabama State went on a 5-0 run with 5:47 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Alanah Pooler, to increase its lead to 13-6. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-12 advantage. Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
UAPB rallied to take a 22-18 lead before Alabama State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 2:50 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Harris, to take a 24-22 lead. The Golden Lions cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 26-25 advantage heading into halftime. Alabama State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.
UAPB then took a 27-26 lead following intermission before Alabama State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Justina Graham, to grab a 34-27 lead with 3:51 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hornets added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 43-34 edge. Alabama State took advantage of six UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
Alabama State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Harris' jumper, to grow the lead to 54-41 with 3:23 to go in the contest. The Golden Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 58-46 win. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
