Alabama State Women's Hoops rallies from second-half deficit to knock off Prairie View A&M

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State women's basketball team rallied from an 15-point deficit at 60-49 to knock off the Prairie View A&M 68-62 at Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (5-13, 3-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Cordasia Harris, who secured a double-double with 26 points and 19 rebounds. Alanah Pooler tacked on 15 points and two steals off of the bench and Kaitlyn Bryant helped out with 13 points and six rebounds from the bench.

Alabama State collected 45 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Prairie View A&M's 23, led by Harris' 19 boards. The Hornets also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 23 rebounds into 21 second chance points.

The Alabama State defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Prairie View A&M turnovers while committing 13. Those takeaways turned into eight points on the offensive end of the floor. Amari Franklin led the way individually for the Hornets with four steals.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 12-9 advantage, Alabama State went on a 5-0 run with 3:12 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 17-9. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-11 advantage. Alabama State capitalized on four Prairie View A&M turnovers in the period, turning them into five points on the other end of the floor.

The Hornets maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 33-32 edge. Alabama State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Prairie View A&M then took a 54-39 lead following intermission before Alabama State went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 54-45 with 1:14 to go in the third. Prairie View A&M countered and stretched its lead to 57-47 heading into the fourth. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.

Alabama State narrowed its deficit to 62-53 before going on a 13-0 run to seize a 66-62 lead with seven seconds to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 68-62 win. Alabama State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 13 of its 21 total points.
