Alabama State Falls in SWAC Contest

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Alabama State men's basketball team had 10 fewer turnovers than Texas Southern but fell 80-69 to the Tigers at home Monday.

The Hornets (8-12, 4-3) had two players score in double figures, led by TJ Madlock, who notched a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. CJ Hines tacked on 16 points and seven rebounds and Micah Octave added eight points and six steals.

Madlock pulled down seven offensive rebounds to lead the Alabama State offense, which grabbed 20 boards and turned them into 18 second-chance points.

The Alabama State defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 16 Texas Southern turnovers while committing six. Those takeaways turned into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Octave's six steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

After falling behind 24-18, Alabama State went on an 11-0 run with 5:56 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Amarr Knox, to take a 29-24. Alabama State entered halftime with a 33-30 advantage. In the period, Alabama State capitalized on 10 Texas Southern turnovers, turning them into 17 points on the other end of the floor.

Texas Southern then erased the Alabama State lead in the game's final quarter for an 80-69 comeback victory. Alabama State took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 36 points in the lane.
