Alabama State Falls in Close Contest at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --The Alabama State men's basketball team held Bethune-Cookman to just 11.1 percent from deep in a 2-for-18 shooting performance, but fell 67-64 to the Wildcats on the road Saturday.

The Hornets (8-13, 4-4) had two players score in double figures, led by CJ Hines, who had 19 points and two steals. D'Ante Bass added 11 points off the bench, and TJ Madlock added nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

The Alabama State offense was very productive from downtown, making 10 threes on 27 attempts. Hines was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining three treys in the contest. The Alabama State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 13 Bethune-Cookman turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Hines' two steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

After falling behind 28-20, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run with 7:55 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 28-26. Bethune-Cookman answered and added to its lead, leaving the Hornets down 33-29 at halftime.

Bethune-Cookman kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 48-41 advantage before Alabama State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Shawn Fulcher's three, to seize a 50-48 lead with 9:18 to go in the contest. Bethune-Cookman re-asserted control, outscoring the Hornets 19-14 the rest of the way to hand Alabama State the 67-64 loss. Alabama State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting seven shots from deep to score 21 of its 35 points.
