LORMAN, Miss. | Cordasia Harris recored her third straight double-double but it was not enought as the Alabama State women's basketball team cfell to Alcorn State University 61-54 on Thursday.
The Hornets (4-11, 2-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Cordasia Harris, who put together a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Taylor Smith tacked on 12 points and Kaitlyn Bryant chipped in as well with 12 points from the bench.
Harris pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Alabama State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 16 second chance points.
The Alabama State defense held Alcorn State shooters to just 36.7 percent from the field. The Hornets also kept Destiny Brown to 4-of-17 shooting in the game. The Braves did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points while Alabama State pulled down 29 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
Alabama State started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a three from O'Mariyah Tucker, to take an early lead with 7:55 left in the first quarter. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 11-10 advantage. Alabama State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring six of its 11 points close to the basket.
The Hornets used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 33-30 edge. Alabama State dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 22 points close to the basket.
Alcorn State then took a 48-37 lead following intermission before Alabama State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bryant, to trim its deficit to 48-43 with 19 seconds to go in the third. Alcorn State countered and stretched its lead to 50-43 heading into the fourth. Alabama State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's 10 third-quarter points.
Alabama State narrowed its deficit to 50-45 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Smith's three, to seize a 52-50 lead with 7:28 to go in the contest. Alcorn State re-asserted control, outscoring the Hornets 11-2 the rest of the way to hand Alabama State the 61-54 loss. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
