MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State women's soccer came up short in a 2–1 loss to Texas Southern on Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Complex, despite a late push from the Lady Hornets.
Texas Southern (5-6-3, 3-1 SWAC) struck first just eight minutes into the match when Bailey Buckner found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Lady Hornets (1-14-1, 0-5 SWAC) tightened up defensively after the early strike, with goalkeeper Corrine Brookes making key stops to keep the margin at one going into halftime.
The Lady Tigers extended their lead in the 70th minute as Kamara Bradley converted off an assist from Alyssa Taylor to make it 2–0. Alabama State continued to battle, and in the 87th minute, McKinley Hacker converted a penalty kick — her third goal of the season — to bring ASU within one.
Despite several late opportunities, the Lady Hornets couldn't find the equalizer. Brookes finished with four saves in goal, while Hacker and Emmanuella Yapi led the Hornets' offense with two shots each.
The Lady Hornets are off until Oct. 24, when they travel to Arkansas to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3:30 p.m.
