Pine Bluff, Ark. — Alabama State women's soccer earned its first Southwestern Athletic Conference victory of the season Friday afternoon, defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 2–1 at Pumphrey Stadium.
The Lady Hornets (2-14-1, 1-5-0 SWAC) erased an early deficit with a pair of first-half goals, then held firm defensively to secure the win over the Lady Lions (1-11-1, 0-6-0).
Arkansas-Pine Bluff struck first in the 25th minute when Brooke Gonzalez scored unassisted for her first goal of the year. Alabama State answered quickly, leveling the match just six minutes later. Adriana Gallucci found the back of the net in the 31st minute, also unassisted, for her second goal of the season.
Moments later, Serenity Safeeullah delivered what proved to be the game-winner, scoring in the 36th minute to give Alabama State a 2–1 advantage it would not relinquish.
The Lady Hornets controlled much of the action, outshooting UAPB 12–6 overall and 7–2 in shots on goal. Alabama State also earned five corner kicks to the Lady Lions' two.
Corrine Brookes earned her first win of the season in goal, recording one save across 90 minutes of play.
Alabama State will continue the road trip with a match at Grambling State Sunday, Oct. 26 at noon.
