Alabama State Rallies Past Alabama A&M in Five-Set Thriller

Clay has career-high 55 assists, surpassed 1,000 career assists

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama State outlasted rival Alabama A&M in a dramatic five-set battle, winning 3-2 (20–25, 25–21, 11–25, 25–16, 15–11) at Lockhart Gymnasium in Montgomery.

After dropping a tight opening set and an even closer second set, the Hornets leaned on dominant hitting and late-set execution to claw their way back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Alabama A&M by winning the final three sets.

Alabama State's turning point came in the third set, where they surged to a 25–16 win behind Jyriah Morgan, Taylor Williams, and Camille Holloway, forcing a fourth set, which the Hornets won 25-21 holding the visiting Bulldogs to only a .062 hitting percentage.

In the final frame, the Hornets took control after an early deficit. Morgan and Williams delivered key kills, while Alabama State capitalized on A&M errors to close out the match 15–11. Williams sealed the win with a service ace on match point.

There were a lot of key players in tonight's conference win as Morgan led the way with a match-high 25 kills while hitting .362. Holloway hit .393 on her way to a 15-kill performance and Kaylen Hines just missed a double-digit kill night with eight finishes while hitting a match-best .467.

Kamrynn Clay led the offense with a career-high 55 assists and also added two kills and five digs. Clay entered the match with 970 career assists and picked up her 1,000th assist in the match and now has 1,025 assists for her career. Brooke Adams (15) and Breanna Swanson (14) led the team in digs. The Hornets finished the match with 11 blocked shots, led by Hines who had six total and also ASU had five service aces, but none bigger than Williams' ace to end the match in favor of the Hornets.

The Bulldogs also had several standouts in the match led by Rayishon Jackman's 21 kills. Fatima Ramirez added 13 kills and finished with a double-double as she added 10 digs. Kelani Talakai had 14 digs with Nhya Morgan finishing with six total blocks. Nisaan Martinez was the third Bulldog to reach double-digits in kills, finishing with 11. Briana Smith had 29 assists with Kaydee Smith adding 16

Both teams now sit at 5-2 in conference play, with Alabama State improving to 6-13 overall and Alabama A&M dropping to 14-6. Neither team will have much time to dwell on this match as the two teams will meet again in five days in Huntsville on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
