MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Oct. 26, 2025) — Alabama State picked up a key Southwestern Athletic Conference victory Sunday afternoon, defeating Texas Southern 3–1 (22–25, 25–16, 25–17, 25–20) inside Lockhart Gymnasium.
After dropping a tightly contested first set, the Hornets responded with a dominant offensive showing the rest of the way, hitting .222 as a team and outpacing the Tigers in both kills (54–44) and assists (52-41).
Essence Jones led Alabama State with 18 kills, while Jyriah Morgan added 14. Kaylen Hines had a solid performance for the Hornets adding seven kills and a team-best seven blocked shots (two solo).
Kamrynn Clay led the match with 35 assists, and Sierra Scanlan added 11. The Hornets had 58 digs compared to TSU's 49 with Brooke Adams leading the way with a match-best 17. Trinity Mitchell also reached double digits in digs with 10.
The Hornets used the serve to their advantage in the match coming up with service aces at important times in the match as they finished with eight. Jones and Adams led the way with two each.
After Texas Southern took the opening frame 25–22, Alabama State stormed back to control the match with efficient hitting and steady serving, taking the next three sets 25–16, 25–17, and 25–20 to close out the win.
With the win the Hornets moved to 8-14 overall and now stands 7-3 in conference play. Texas Southern falls to 7-16 overall and 6-4 in the SWAC. The Hornets will be back in action in the upcoming week with matches at Florida A&M, Friday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m., and at Bethune-Cookman on Sunday, Nov. 2 at noon.
