Colorado Springs, Colo. – Alabama State got a career performance from Micah Simpson, but Air Force's late surge in the final minute pushed the Falcons past the Hornets 66–64 on Wednesday evening at Clune Arena.
Simpson scored a new career-high by pouring in 30 points on 10-for-17 shooting, including four three-pointers, and carried ASU throughout both halves. The Hornets (2–3) built a 39–32 halftime lead behind Simpson's 21 first-half points and efficient offense that shot nearly 41% before the break.
Alabama State stretched the lead to nine early in the second half when Simpson buried a three with 15:49 remaining. However, Air Force slowly chipped away and turned the game in their favor behind hot perimeter shooting and second‐chance scoring. The Falcons shot 55% in the second half and knocked down nine threes overall.
The closing moments were a back-and-forth battle. Asjon Anderson hit two free throws with 3:06 left to give ASU a 64–62 edge, but Air Force answered with key baskets, including Kam Sanders' go-ahead layup with 16 seconds left. Alabama State had two chances to tie or win in the final seconds, but a turnover and a missed three ended the comeback bid.
Anderson finished with 14 points and four assists, while Jerquarius Stanback added eight points and a game-high three steals. Alabama State won the turnover battle and outscored Air Force 11–6 on fast breaks, but the Falcons' 13 second-chance points and late execution proved decisive.
Lucas Hobin led Air Force with 20 points, and Caleb Walker added 17 and 12 rebounds.
The Hornets will be back at Clune Arena on Friday, Nov. 21, when they play IU Indianapolis in the Air Force Classic MTE event. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
