Albuquerque, N.M. -- Alabama State delivered one of its most complete offensive performances of the season, but a late surge by New Mexico swung momentum as the Hornets fell 93–87 on Wednesday night at The Pit in Albuquerque.
Hornets Come Out Firing
Alabama State controlled the game early, riding blistering first-half shooting to build a 51–38 halftime lead. The Hornets shot 61.3% from the field and 64.3% from three, with Micah Simpson and Asjon Anderson combining for 30 first-half points.
Simpson pushed the tempo throughout, scoring 15 before the break, while Anderson drilled three triples and added 15 of his own in the opening period. Tyler Byrd provided a spark off the bench with eight quick points in the first half.
ASU led by as many as 13 points in the first period and again by 15 early in the second half before New Mexico made its push.
New Mexico's Push
The Lobos responded in the second half with improved efficiency and physicality, outscoring the Hornets 55–36 over the final 20 minutes. Jake Hall caught fire, scoring 21 of his 24 points in the second half while hitting six total threes.
A 14–0 UNM run midway through the period erased ASU's double-digit lead and tied the game at 75–75 with just over eight minutes remaining.
From there, momentum swung to New Mexico as the Lobos capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities. A fast-break layup by Deyton Albury put UNM ahead 86–83 entering the final two minutes—a lead they would not relinquish.
Hornets' Late Effort Not Enough
Alabama State continued to fight down the stretch, with R'Chaun King and Jerquarius Stanback contributing key baskets. Stanback finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, including several second-chance buckets and King finished with 10 points as the Hornets had five players reach double-figure scoring.
Anderson added 30 points overall, highlighted by six-of12 shooting from three and a perfect six-for-six at the free-throw line. Simpson followed with 18 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals.
ASU completed a 12-day, five-game road trip and will now be off until Dec. 7, when they hit the road to play at UT Martin in a game scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT start.
