PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Five Hornets scored in double digits and Alabama State knocked off the UAPB Golden Lions 75-63 on the road Saturday.
The Hornets (11-14, 7-5) had five players score in double figures, led by TJ Madlock, who had 20 points and eight rebounds. Micah Simpson tacked on 13 points off the bench, and CJ Hines chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
D'Ante Bass pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead the Alabama State offense, which grabbed 15 boards and turned them into 14 second chance points.
The Alabama State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 17 UAPB turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 21 points on the other end of the floor. Hines' four steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 29-26, Alabama State went on a 9-0 run with 3:51 left in the first half to take a 35-29 lead. The Hornets then lost some of that lead but still entered halftime with a 38-35 advantage. In the period, Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 38 points.
Alabama State started scoring points in the second half almost immediately. It went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Amarr Knox's jumper, to grow the lead to 46-35 with 17:35 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way to the 75-63 win. Alabama State capitalized on nine UAPB turnovers in the period, collecting 11 points off those turnovers.
