Alabama State gets 29 bench points in 79-56 win over Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, Miss. --The Alabama State men's basketball team got a 29-point showing from the bench on the way to a 79-56 victory against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on the road Monday.

The Hornets (12-14, 8-5) had three players score in double figures, led by TJ Madlock, who had 13 points and four steals. CJ Hines tacked on 13 points, and Jasteven Walker chipped in with 12 points.

The Alabama State offense was impressive from downtown, knocking down 14 threes on 32 attempts. Hines hit three treys for the Hornets in the contest.

Alabama State's defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 38.1 percent shooting from the field. The Hornets also limited Jair Horton to four of 15 shooting and nine points in the game. The Delta Devils did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass, either. They finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed six second-chance points, while Alabama State cleared 32 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

Alabama State started the scoring by going on a 12-0 run to take an early lead with 17:46 left in the first half. The Hornets then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 46-30 advantage. Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down nine shots to account for 27 of its 46 points.

Following intermission, Alabama State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 53-36 before going on a 13-0 run, finished off by Antonio "Tj" Madlock's three, to grow the lead to 66-36 with 12:47 to go in the contest. The Delta Devils narrowed the margin, but the Hornets cruised the rest of the way for the 79-56 win. Alabama State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 33 points.
