Cruz and Laboy lead Alabama State Past Grambling

VERO BEACH, Fla. | The Alabama State Hornets got three hits out of sophomore Juan Cruz and 5.1 solid innings from Jorhan Laboy in a 6-5 win against the Grambling Tigers at the Andre Dawson Classic on Friday.

Junior Jorhan Laboy (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Alabama State (2-4). The left-hander went 5.1 shutout innings while giving up only two hits against one walk and striking out seven.

Cruz's three-hit day led the Hornets offensively. Junior Kameron Douglas compiled a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Junior Devin Chandler also helped out for Alabama State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Douglas came across to score the lone run of the inning for Alabama State and get them on the board.

The Tigers then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-1 lead before the Hornets got back on the board in the third. which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Tigers.

Alabama State kept the Tigers off the board before rallying to snatch a 6-5 lead in the fifth. Alabama State scored two runs, including one on a solo homer from Douglas. The score remained 6-5 for the rest of the game, as Alabama State held on for the win.
