COLLEGE PARK, Ga. --The Alabama State men's basketball team got a 37-point performance from the bench on the way to an 84-79 win over the Texas Southern at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park Thursday.
The Hornets (17-15) had four players score in double figures, led by D'Ante Bass, who had 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals. TJ Madlock tacked on 15 points, eight rebounds, and six assists and CJ Hines chipped in with 15 points.
Led by Bass' four offensive rebounds, Alabama State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 12 second-chance points.
Alabama State forced 18 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 12 themselves in Thursday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shawn Fulcher led the way individually with three steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 13-9 advantage, Alabama State went on a 9-0 run with 12:22 left in the first half, culminating in a three from TJ Madlock, to increase its lead to 22-9. The Hornets entered halftime with a 41-29 advantage. Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down nine shots to account for 27 of its 41 points.
Alabama State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 78-69 with 2:27 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin, but the Hornets still held on for the 84-79 win. Alabama State capitalized on 11 Texas Southern turnovers in the period, collecting 11 points.
