Alabama State downs Defending Champion Grambling State and Advances to SWAC Championship

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. --The Alabama State men's basketball team got a 25-point showing from the bench on the way to a 64-62 win over the Grambling Tigers at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park Friday.

The Hornets (18-15) had two players score in double figures, led by CJ Hines, who had 15 points and five assists. Tyler Mack added 12 points off the bench, and TJ Madlock added nine points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.

Alabama State utilized fantastic ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 16 assists on 23 made field goals. Hines' five assists led the distribution list for the Hornets.

Alabama State's defense held Grambling to only 36.4 percent shooting from the field, including 22.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Hornets also limited Mikale Stevenson to 2-of-15 shooting and nine points in the game. The Tigers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed 10 second-chance points while Alabama State cleared 27 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 24-17, Alabama State went on a 5-0 run with 8:26 left in the first half, culminating in a three from TJ Madlock, to narrow its deficit to 24-22. Grambling answered and added to its lead, leaving the Hornets down 36-33 entering halftime.

Grambling kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 56-51 advantage before Alabama State went on a 6-0 run to seize a 57-56 lead with 2:19 in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 64-62 win. Alabama State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 31 total points.
