Alabama State takes down Jackson State 7-6 in 8 innings

JACKSON, Miss. | Alabama State University softball took advantage of a throwing error to plate a run in the eighth inning to take a 7-6 win and split a doubleheader with Jackson State University on Saturday.

Jackson State claimed a 9-8 win in game one.

GAME 2 | Alabama State 7, Jackson State 6

JACKSON, Miss. --The Alabama State Hornets needed eight innings to finish the job, but earned the 7-6 extra-innings victory over the Jackson State Tigers Wednesday.

Freshman Mason Quinnie (1-6) got the win out of the bullpen for Alabama State (5-26, ). The right-hander went three innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits.

In the batter's box, the Hornets were paced by freshman Bailee Williams, who went 4-for-4 on the day with two doubles and two RBI. Freshman Ayana Frank put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Senior Leah Richardson also chipped in for Alabama State, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Alabama State got an RBI single from sophomore Makenzie Owens, scoring Williams from second base.

After the Tigers rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Hornets came back to retake the lead in the third inning. The Alabama State offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Williams, which brought the score to 6-1 in favor of the Hornets.

Jackson State clawed back to even the ballgame at six before Alabama State reclaimed a 7-6 advantage in the eighth inning. The score remained 7-6 for the rest of the game, as Alabama State held on for the win.

» The Hornets power output was led by Williams, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Every Alabama State starter reached base safely in the win.

GAME 1 | Jackson State 9, Alabama State 8

JACKSON, Miss. --An explosive offensive output was not enough for Alabama State on Saturday. The Hornets put up eight runs, but could not hold the Jackson State Tigers at bay, and were defeated 9-8.

Sophomore Kohana Pouson (3-9) took the loss in the circle for Alabama State (4-26, ).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets were trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Junior Alana Scott's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Alabama State.

The Tigers broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the fifth inning, when the Hornets got back on the scoreboard. Alabama State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a senior Leah Richardson, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Hornets.

Jackson State fired back to even the ballgame at five before Alabama State reclaimed an 8-5 advantage in the sixth inning. The Hornets recorded three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a junior Brooke Ramsey. The Hornets were unable to hold the lead, as Jackson State scored four times over the remaining one inning to grab the 9-8 win.
