ITTA BENA, Miss. | Leah Richardson racked up four RBI to key Alabama State University softball's 9-4 win over the Mississippi Valley State Delta on Saturday.
Freshman Mason Quinnie (0-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Alabama State (11-27, 9-6). The right-hander went four innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out one.
Richardson went 2-for-4 with a home run in addition to her four RBIs for the Hornets. Junior Alana Scott put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Mickey Coslor also chipped in for Alabama State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Alabama State scored three times, all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Richardson.
The Hornets then held the Delta Devilettes scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Senior Zoee Disroe came across to score the lone run of the inning for Alabama State, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Hornets.
Alabama State kept Mississippi Valley State scoreless before building their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning.
The Delta Devilettes fought back, closing the gap to 5-2 until Alabama State added some insurance in the sixth. The Hornets scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Richardson, bringing the Alabama State advantage to 9-2. Mississippi Valley State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hornets still coasted to the 9-4 win.
