Hornets Place Four on All-SWAC Preseason Football Squads

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State University placed four players on the Preseason All-SWAC football teams released the SWAC office on Monday.
 
Offensive lineman Desmond Daniels and safety Keane Lewis were selected to the first team, while offensive linemen Desmond Penn and Cameron Smith earned their way onto the second team.
 
Daniels was a Second-Team All-SWAC selection in 2024, playing in 11 games in 2024...graded 85 percent and gave up one sack over 466 snaps played. He started 11 of 12 games, allowing eight pressures with 18 knockdowns.
 
Lewis was a Second-Team All-SWAC honoree at safety in 2024. Lewis played and started in 12 games at safety...had 40 tackles that included 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks. He was second on the team with two interceptions and two pass breakups and tied for 2nd in the SWAC with two fumbles recovered (15thFCS). Lewis added a blocked punt return for a touchdown, which ranked first in the SWAC and 4th nationally.
Smith made 12 starts, playing 486 snaps, and grading 86 percent. He allowed zero sacks and only six pressures.
 
Penn played in 10 games as a versatile lineman in 2024.
 
The offensive line cleared the way for 2,372 rushing yards, including four games with 200-plus yards rushing. ASU ran for a season high of 308 at Bethune-Cookman, 211 yards against Florida A&M, 203 against North Carolina Central, and 204 against Alabama A&M. Alabama State rushed for 100 yards in 9-of-11 games, missing the 100-yard mark with 97 yards against Alcorn State and Grambling State. The Hornets out-rushed 9-of-12 opponents, while the 1 sacks allowed were the fewest allowed by an offensive line in the SWAC, while the 1.5 per game ranked second (32nd FCS).
