MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State women's soccer fell 3-0 to West Florida on Friday evening at the ASU Soccer Complex, as the visiting Argonauts used two quick goals in the opening 12 minutes and a second-half penalty kick to secure the win.
West Florida struck first in the 8th minute when defender Lindsay Gill fired home an unassisted shot to make it 1-0. Just four minutes later, Megan Gettys doubled the Argonauts' advantage with another unassisted goal, putting the Lady Hornets in an early hole.
Despite the slow start, Alabama State created several chances in the first half. Adriana Gallucci and Serenity Safeeullah both forced saves, while Sydney Washington and Erica Mathews each put pressure on the Argonauts' back line. Goalkeeper Corrine Brookes kept ASU within reach, making three first-half saves against a flurry of UWF attempts.
The Lady Hornets looked more composed in the second half, but West Florida extended its lead in the 56th minute when Ayla Kiziltas converted a penalty kick to make it 3-0. Alabama State continued to fight, with Gallucci generating multiple late shots, but they couldn't break through against Argonauts keeper Zoe Mirus.
Brookes finished with seven saves in a strong performance despite the scoreline, while ASU tallied nine total shots, including three on target.
With the loss, Alabama State moves to 0-3-1 on the season.
The Hornets are back in action Sunday, Aug. 31 when they play host to Mercer at 1 p.m.
