MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama State women's soccer rallied in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) on Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Hornets controlled possession throughout the match, outshooting the Warhawks 23-4 and holding a 60% possession advantage. Despite the dominance, Alabama State found itself trailing at halftime after AUM's Za'Keya Charles broke through with a goal in the 29th minute.
Alabama State responded after the break, finally breaking through in the 59th minute when pressure in the box forced an AUM own goal to level the match at 1-1. Just three minutes later, Erica Mathews delivered the game-winner, finishing confidently in the 62nd minute for her first goal of the season.
Mathews led the Lady Hornets' attack with six shots, five on frame, while Zeta Chevalier and Emmanuella Yapi added three attempts each. Goalkeeper Kailyn Roselli entered at halftime and secured the win with two saves, combining with starter Corrine Brookes to allow just one goal on the day.
The win was also the first win for ASU head coach Alicia Wilson as the coach of the Hornets.
ASU will now jump into conference season hosting a pair of SWAC matches this weekend. The Hornets will host Southern on Friday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon match against Jackson State at 1 p.m.
