MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University women's volleyball earned its second straight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday afternoon at Lockhart Gymnasium.
The Hornets (3-11, 2-0 SWAC) controlled the match offensively, hitting .356 as a team while holding the Golden Lions (0-14, 0-1 SWAC) to just .221. Alabama State's balanced attack featured four players with at least seven kills.
Taylor Williams led the way with 12 kills while hitting .571, followed closely by Kaylen Hines with nine kills and a .538 hitting percentage. Zanobia Willis added seven kills, and Jyriah Morgan chipped in six while posting a .348 clip. Setter Kamrynn Clay paced the offense with 39 assists and added 11 digs for a double-double.
Defensively, Sierra Scanlan anchored the back row with a team-high 13 digs, while Willis and Williams each contributed key blocks at the net. The Hornets finished with five total team blocks and six service aces, using timely scoring runs to put away each set.
Alabama State took control early, hitting .560 in the opening set to claim a 25-19 win. The Hornets followed with a 25-20 decision in the second and closed the sweep with another 25-20 victory in the third, backed by strong serving from Bailee Payne and steady finishing from Williams and Hines.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff was led by Haley Reeves with 12 kills and Samantha Newman with 10, but the Golden Lions could not overcome Alabama State's offensive efficiency and balanced attack.
The Hornets will look to continue their strong start in conference play when they return to the court next week.
