TALLAHASEE, Fla. | Alabama State University men's tennis opened the 2026 spring season with a dominant sweep before running into a nationally ranked opponent Sunday at the Indoor Tennis Courts in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Hornets began the weekend with a 7-0 victory over The Citadel, earning wins in all three doubles matches and all six singles flights to secure the program's first win of the season.

Alabama State took control early in doubles play, highlighted by victories from the pairs of Vid Maric and Gordan Mileusnic at No. 2 and Matteo Lataste and Martin Catrice at No. 3. In singles action, the Hornets were efficient across the lineup, with straight-set wins from Milan Ristov, Martin Catrice, Gordan Mileusnic, Flor De Sitter and Loris Gueli. Vid Maric capped the sweep with a hard-fought three-set win at the No. 4 position, winning the super tiebreak to close out the match.

Later Sunday, Alabama State faced a stiff challenge against No. 22 Florida State and saw the match halted after the Seminoles secured the four points needed for a 4-0 decision.

Florida State claimed the doubles point and followed with singles wins at the No. 4, No. 2 and No. 6 positions to clinch the match. Several other singles contests were left unfinished, including competitive efforts from Ristov at No. 1 and Mileusnic at No. 3 before play was stopped.
