PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | The Alabama State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 95-80 win against the Prairie View A&M Panthers on the road Saturday.
The Hornets (6-13, 3-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Micah Simpson, who had 23 points, four assists and two steals. Asjon Anderson tacked on 19 points, six assists and two steals and Jerquarius Stanback chipped in as well with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Alabama State offense was impressive from deep, knocking down 12 threes on 24 attempts. Anderson hit five treys for the Hornets in the contest.
The Alabama State defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 23 Prairie View A&M turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 27 points on the offensive end of the floor. Anderson's two steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 43-35 advantage, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run with 3:46 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Tyler MacK, to increase its lead to 49-35. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 52-45 advantage. Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 52 points.
Alabama State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Damarien Yates' three, to grow the lead to 61-49 with 15:11 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 95-80 win. Alabama State capitalized on 10 Prairie View A&M turnovers in the period, collecting 13 points off those turnovers.
