MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Melisa Mekic clinched the decisive point with a three-set victory on court three as Alabama State University edged Auburn University at Montgomery 4-3 on Friday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point, the Hornets answered in singles play with four wins. Senna Van Den Heuvel and Alexia Campagna earned straight-set victories on courts six and five, respectively, while Kesmat El Tawil followed with a two-set win at No. 2 singles to even the match at 3-all. Mekic then sealed the team victory by outlasting Sophia Neri in a back-and-forth battle on court three.
Alabama State's lone doubles win came on court three, where El Tawil and Van Den Heuvel posted a 6-4 decision. Auburn Montgomery took the point with wins on courts one and two.
In singles, El Tawil defeated Mercedes Cid 6-3, 6-4 on court two, Campagna topped Nagisa Yonezaw 6-3, 6-2 on court five, and Van Den Heuvel cruised past Ana Campigotto 6-1, 6-1 on court six. Mekic rallied to close out the match on court three, overcoming Neri in three sets to secure the Hornets' second win of the season
Alabama State improved to 1-1 on the spring, while Auburn Montgomery fell to 0-1.
