PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Alabama State University men's basketball dropped a 90-79 road decision to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday evening at H.O. Clemmons Arena despite placing three players in double figures.
Asjon Anderson led the Hornets with a game-high 23 points, shooting 7 of 16 from the floor and a perfect 6 of 6 at the free-throw line. Cam Palesse followed with 19 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting effort, while Micah Simpson added 12 points and four assists for Alabama State (4-11, 1-1 SWAC).
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-10, 2-0 SWAC) built a 42-32 halftime lead and maintained control throughout much of the second half, using balanced scoring and timely perimeter shooting to keep the Hornets at bay. The Golden Lions shot 52.6 percent from three-point range and converted 34 of 41 attempts at the free-throw line.
Alabama State battled back after intermission, trimming the deficit to two points on multiple occasions early in the second half, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff responded with an 11-0 run to regain momentum. The Golden Lions extended their lead to as many as 15 points down the stretch.
The Hornets shot 44.3 percent from the field and outrebounded UAPB 29-41 but were hurt by 22 turnovers that led to 25 Golden Lion points.
Alabama State will continue Southwestern Athletic Conference play later this week as the Hornets return home to host Jackson State University at 3 p.m. inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN U.
