Volleyball Trio Pick Up Conference Honors in Hornets Perfect Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama State University women's volleyball team cruised to a pair of wins this past week, and three of the team's catalysts – setter Kamrynn Clay, middle blocker Alexis Williams and libero Mirra Riddle – were recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with weekly honors, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

Clay and Riddle collect their third weekly recognitions of the season, with the former named SWAC Setter of the Week for the third time and the latter named SWAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after opening the year with the conference's first Newcomer of the Week award. This week, that honor would go to Williams, who has come on strong lately and earned her first weekly honor since transferring from Southeastern Oklahoma State. These honors come on the heels of two pivotal home victories against Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State, the team's first two conference victories of the season.

Clay had one of her best weeks of the season, recording a combined 75 assists across seven sets, averaging nearly 11 assists per set while assisting on a 97.4 percent success rate. Her best performance came in a four-set outing against Jackson State, as she contributed 49 assists while adding seven digs in a 3-1 victory.

The Saint Hedwig, Texas, native continues to have a strong grip at the top of the conference's setter statistical leaderboards, retaining the top spot in total assists (614) and assists per set (8.41) while maintaining her career-best mark that is over a half assist per set better than her SWAC Setter of the Year campaign a season ago.

Riddle has similarly continued building on her numbers from the last time she won weekly awards nearly a month ago, as the North Bend, Ore., native tallied 40 digs over seven sets, an average of 5.71 digs per set, while receiving opposing attacks on a 97.6 percent rate this weekend. Her 26-dig effort on Sunday aided the team in its win over Jackson State, as she withstood the attacks of one of the contenders for the SWAC Championship Tournament later this season.

Riddle has continued to build her Hornet resume, placing fourth in the SWAC in total digs (295) while being one of four liberos to have more than four digs per set (4.04). She also sits in fourth in service aces per set (0.38) as she continues to round out a role as much more than a defensive specialist on a strong ASU roster.

Williams makes her way into the spotlight after leading the front line with 26 kills and seven blocks across the two games this weekend, averaging 3.71 kills per set while successfully landing well over 30 percent of her attack attempts. The Lawton, Okla., native has turned in four consecutive games with double-digit kills, including a stellar 16-kill, four-block match in the win over Jackson State.

The junior transfer has started to become a fixture on the court for head coach Penny Lucas-White's team, as Williams improved her attack percentage in back-to-back weeks, rising to a .239 mark that she has eclipsed in each of her past four outings. She boasts a strong stat line across the board with 120 kills, 32 digs and 28 block assists this year as she has emerged as a viable option for the Lady Hornets.

Thanks to the efforts of these student-athletes, the Lady Hornets (4-16, 2-5 SWAC) came away with a 3-0 win over the Delta Devils on Thursday, and used that momentum to take down the Tigers in a strong, 3-1 match inside the Joe L. Reed Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The short stretch brings life back into Bama State's locker room, while it also gives the team a 4-1 record at home as it is set to finish the remainder of its regular season Montgomery slate inside the Lockhart Gymnasium.

Clay, Riddle, Williams and the rest of the Lady Hornets will return to the home court tomorrow, October 22, for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Alabama A&M Bulldogs inside Lockhart Gymnasium. It then finishes out the week with road battles at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.) and Grambling State (Sunday, Oct. 25 at noon).
