BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second straight week, two members of the Alabama State University women's soccer team were recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) as the best in their position this week, as goalkeeper
Deetya Satyal repeated while midfielder
Queenster Mensah got her flowers for her performance, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Mensah and Satyal were both pivotal in a tiresome, physical and relentless effort in the team's 0-0 shutout against top-seeded Jackson State. The game, which featured 20 fouls and five yellow cards, was a fearsome battle from both sides, and despite the impressive and valiant efforts from the Tigers, the Lady Hornet defense, anchored by Mensah and backed up by Satyal, stood tall and trumped the league's best team for one of its most impressive defensive showings of the year in the regular-season finale.
Satyal, who claimed the same honor after serving as the backstop in a pair of shutouts, put forth a six-save effort while standing in the face of 12 total shots. The attack, which pressed on throughout the game and intensified into the second half, got well within her box in most of the match's final two minutes, but a pair of saves and some exceptional game control kept the score even through the final horn.
The Hornets' starting goalkeeper has been a stud since winning a three-way battle for the starting job. She has played over 600 minutes in the Black and Gold, starting 10 games and leading the Hornets to a 2-6-2 record during her time on the pitch while aiding the team in its growth into one of the strongest defensive powers in the conference down the stretch.
Mensah, meanwhile, has served as the defensive motor throughout the season, and as she has appeared to give every last ounce of effort on the field this season, this was simply just another one of those games. Her performance featured strong defensive play in the midfield, where she broke up several tackles and turned the ball back over to the Hornets on numerous occasions. Down the stretch in the final 45 minutes, the Ghanaian midfielder was able to win first and second balls for the team, and was almost always in the middle of the action, including in the teams' last efforts at the Tigers' end of the pitch.
The second-year star has been one of the most pivotal and consistent players for the Black and Gold, scoring a pair of goals while starting all 16 games and being a pivotal factor in the team becoming one of the conference's strongest defensive powers down the stretch.
With the conclusion of the team's regular season on Sunday, the Lady Hornets turn its focus to Prairie View, Texas, where it will compete in the SWAC Championship Tournament. The first round is set to take place on Thursday, Nov. 12, with the Championship Game set for Sunday, Nov. 15.
