Alabama State Men's Basketball Takes 79-61 victory over UAPB

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University men's basketball  claimed a 79-61 win over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at the Dunn-Olver Academe.

The Hornets (8-17, 5-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Jerquarius Stanback, who had 19 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Tyler Byrd tacked on 14 points and Micah Simpson helped out with 13 points, seven assists, and three steals.

Alabama State out-rebounded UAPB 39-30 in Saturday's game, led by eight boards from Jasteven Walker. The Hornets also pulled down 16 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points.

The Alabama State defense held UAPB shooters to only 39.1 percent from the field. The Golden Lions did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored two second-chance points while Alabama State pulled down 23 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 17-14 advantage, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run with 11:47 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Asjon Anderson, to increase its lead to 23-14. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 34-33 advantage. Alabama State capitalized on 10 UAPB turnovers in the period, turning them into 14 points on the other end of the floor.

Following intermission, Alabama State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 64-54 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Simpson's three, to grow the lead to 71-54 with 3:18 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 79-61 win. Alabama State capitalized on 12 UAPB turnovers in the period, collecting 16 points off those turnovers.
