MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University men's basketball had five players score double figures in a 92-55 win over Mississippi Valley State on Monday.
The Hornets (9-17, 6-7) were led by Jerquarius Stanback, who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. R'Chaun King tacked on 13 points from the bench and Asjon Anderson chipped in 13 points and six assists.
The Alabama State offense was strong from downtown, pouring in nine threes on 24 attempts. Micah Simpson hit three treys for the Hornets in the contest.
Alabama State's defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 32.7 percent shooting from the field. The Delta Devils did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with six offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while Alabama State cleared 36 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After playing to a 20-20 tie, Alabama State went on a 10-0 run with 8:29 left in the first half to take a 30-20 lead. The Hornets then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 42-25 advantage. Alabama State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 25 of its 42 total points.
Following intermission, Alabama State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 66-39 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Cam Palesse's jumper, to grow the lead to 72-39 with 8:07 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 92-55 win. Alabama State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 18 of its 50 total points.
