TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama State University men's tennis dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to the University of Alabama on Sunday at the RBA Indoor Tennis Courts.
The Hornets (2-3) claimed one doubles point and were competitive across the lineup, but Alabama (3-4) secured the match by winning three singles matches in straight sets.
Alabama State earned its lone point in doubles at No. 3, where Milan Ristov and Eloi Roux edged Brendan Loh and Gray Voelzke, 7-6 (10-8). Alabama answered with wins at the top two doubles positions to take the early 1-0 lead. No. 66 Vit Kalina and Matic Kriznik outlasted Vid Maric and Gord Fran Mileusnic 7-6 (9-7) at No. 1, while Andrii Zimnokh and Yoshka Sborowsky posted a 6-4 victory over Matteo Lataste and Martin Catrice at No. 2.
In singles play, Alabama clinched the match with straight-set wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 5. Andrii Zimnokh defeated Milan Ristov 6-1, 6-0 at the top spot, while No. 27 Matic Kriznik earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Martin Catrice at No. 2. Yoshka Sborowsky added the deciding point with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Vid Maric at No. 5.
Three remaining singles matches were left unfinished once the match was decided.
Alabama State returns to action against Mississippi State University on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. in Starkville, Miss.
