VERO BEACH, Fla. | Jackson Williams and Trey Calloway combined to drive in six runs to lead Alabama State University baseball to a 14-5 win over Grambling State University on Saturday at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex.
Esaid Pena (2-0) got the win for Alabama State (4-2). The right-hander went five innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing two walks and striking out four. Jaccob Loeffler also pitched well, going three shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking two and striking out four.
At the plate, the Hornets were paced by Callaway, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Williams put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Breydon Divine also contributed for Alabama State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk, and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Alabama State's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Williams.
The Tigers then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 5-4 until the Hornets expanded their advantage in the third. Alabama State scored a run when Miguel Oropeza drew a walk that scored Jose Alfonso, which brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Hornets.
Alabama State kept Grambling scoreless before expanding their lead to 10-4 the following inning. The Hornets bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Divine.
Alabama State held the Tigers scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Hornets scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Callaway, bringing the Alabama State advantage to 14-4. Grambling put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hornets still coasted to the 14-5 win.
