BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Despite a power surge from Trey Callaway, Alabama State dropped a 10-5 decision to UAB on Tuesday at Young Memorial Field.
Callaway powered the Hornets' offense with two home runs and five RBI, accounting for all of Alabama State's runs in the loss. The catcher finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, delivering a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run shot in the fourth to briefly give the Hornets a 4-2 lead.
Alabama State (5-3) collected nine hits, with Breydon Divine leading the way with two hits, including a double. Jose Alfonso added an RBI double in the fourth, while Jackson Williams also doubled and scored.
UAB (5-4) answered Alabama State's fourth-inning surge with four runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a three-run homer from J.P. Head that put the Blazers back in front, 6-4. The Blazers added single runs in the sixth and a three-run seventh to extend the lead.
Andrew Hunt drove in four runs for UAB, including a two-run double in the first inning that opened the scoring. Kevin Hall Jr. scored twice and reached base four times, helping the Blazers capitalize on 13 walks issued by Alabama State pitching.
Jax Baptist (0-2) took the loss for Alabama State after allowing six runs on six hits with six walks over 3 1/3 innings. Reliever B. Conner (1-0) earned the win for UAB, tossing 5 1/3 innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out five.
Alabama State plated its final run in the seventh on Miguel Oropeza's sacrifice fly, but the Hornets could not close the gap.
The Hornets return to action this weekend hosting Valparaiso for a three-game set starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
