Hornets Drop Heartbreaker In Final Seconds to Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. | Alabama State University men's basketball suffered a heartbreaking 69-68 loss to Southern University on Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, as the Jaguars connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer with six seconds remaining.

The Hornets (7-17, 4-7 SWAC) held a 66-65 advantage late before Southern answered from beyond the arc to move in front, 68-66. Alabama State responded by drawing a foul and converting at the free-throw line to briefly regain the lead, but Southern's final triple proved to be the difference in a tightly contested Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup.

Alabama State battled throughout, trading leads and momentum in a game that featured multiple ties and narrow margins. The Hornets controlled the tempo early and went into halftime locked in a close contest, with neither team able to establish separation.

Offensively, Alabama State was paced by its leading scorers from the game (individual statistics per the uploaded box score), while the Hornets also received key contributions on the glass and from the bench. Defensively, ASU forced timely stops down the stretch but was unable to overcome Southern's late shooting.

Southern was led by its top performers (as listed in the box score), including the shooter who knocked down the decisive 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Alabama State will look to bounce back at home against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside the Dunn-Oiver Acadeome.
