Baseball Drops Series Opener To Spouthern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Southern University erupted for eight runs over the first two innings and never looked back in an 18-6 victory over Alabama State on Friday at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Southern (7-13) plated five runs in the opening frame and added three more in the second to seize early control. The Jaguars finished with 18 runs on 18 hits, highlighted by a five-hit, four-RBI performance from Ryan Hunter.

Alabama State (9-11) answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a leadoff home run from Miguel Oropeza. The Hornets capitalized on a triple from Alex Espaillat and took advantage of a Southern error to trim the deficit to 5-4 after one.

Despite the early response, Southern continued to apply pressure, scoring in each of the first four innings, including a six-run fourth inning that pushed the lead to 15-4.

The Hornets added two runs in the fourth inning on RBI hits from Breydon Divine and Espaillat, but were unable to generate further offense against the Southern bullpen, which held Alabama State to just one hit over the final four innings.

Alabama State's top of the order provided a bright spot in the loss, as Oropeza, Divine and Espaillat combined to go 6-for-11 with three runs scored and three RBI. Oropeza finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored, while Espaillat went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI. Divine added two hits and a run batted in.

Cale Clark and Quentin Jenkins each drove in a run for the Hornets, who finished with eight hits and drew six walks.

Jorhan LaBoy (3-3) took the loss for Alabama State, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits over two innings. Jaxon Baptist and Jacob Loeffler combined to allow seven runs in relief before Jayden Torres and Caio Araujo closed out the game.

Southern starter Bobby Spencer (1-3) earned the win despite allowing six runs (five earned) over four innings. Myles Dismute tossed three scoreless innings in relief to secure his second save.

Xavier Bradley added a home run and three RBI for Southern, while KJ White Jr. and Kameron Byrd each drove in multiple runs as part of the Jaguars' balanced offensive attack.

Alabama State will look to bounce back as the series continues Saturday.
