Bama State Softball Opens SWAC With doubleheader Sweep From Valley

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Alabama State softball scored a combined 25 runs on 25 hits, sweeping Mississippi Valley State, 15-2 and 10-1, on Thursday. 

GAME 1 | Alabama State 15, Mississippi Valley State 2

ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Alabama State Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 15-2 victory over the Mississippi Valley State in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday.

Kohana Pousson (4-4) got the win for Alabama State (7-16, 1-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out seven.

In the batter's box, the Hornets were paced by Tiffany Bruss, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double, a triple and two RBI Alana Scott went 2 -for-2 with a home run and an RBI. Arianna Cox-Cole also contributed for Alabama State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Jaibriel Terrell came across to score the lone run of the inning for Alabama State and get them on the board.

Alabama State's offense exploded for nine runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Cox-Cole and a two-run single from Brooke Ramsey, which made the score to 10-0 in favor of the Hornets.

Mississippi Valley State narrowed Alabama State's lead to 10-1 before the Hornets stretched the advantage to 14-1 in the fourth inning. The Hornets bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of McKenzie Owens.

The Hornets sent in a run on Talee Sims' one-out RBI double, bringing the score to 15-1 in favor of Alabama State. Mississippi Valley State added a run late to finish out the scoring in gmae one.

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Alabama State received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Hornets defeat the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes 10-1 Thursday.

Amanda Cintron (2-4) got the win for Alabama State (8-16, 2-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Alabama State scored twice, with one run coming across on Ayana Frank's single.

The Delta Devilettes failed to push any runs across before the Hornets offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Hornets.

Alabama State kept Mississippi Valley State scoreless before building their lead to 6-0 the following inning.

Alabama State held the Delta Devilettes scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. The Hornets scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run groundout off the bat of Talee Sims, bringing the score to 10-0 in favor of Alabama State. Mississippi Valley State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hornets still coasted to the 10-1 win.
